Job Description

Purpose

The primary purpose of this position is to support the spiritual journey of residents, families, and staff, as appropriate; through worship, visitation, and special programs.

Essential Job Functions Duties and Responsibilities Spiritual Support Functions

1.Actively encourage resident participation and/or engagement in spiritual care programs/”services.”

2.Carries out the Spirituality goals of the Life Enrichment Department.

a.Facilitate one on one care of each resident is paramount

b.When appropriate conduct spiritual assessments on residents, and document

c.If needed, organize worship services, life celebrations, and religious holiday programs  in creative and ecumenical ways

d.Establish positive working relationships with all members of the health care team as well as with volunteers.

3.Assist volunteers implementing various worship experiences for residents.

a.Manage communication and set-up for spiritual care activities

b.Assist, as needed, with escorting residents to and from spiritual care programs

4.Attentive to residents’ church connections

a.Welcome visiting clergy when they are in the building

5.Report any observed or reported changes in a resident’s condition and/or needs to a Nurse or the Life Enrichment Director.

Administrative Functions

1.Assist in the implementation and facilitation of the spiritual care programs in the facility

2.As needed, attend facility special events and staff meetings

3.Oversee spiritual care volunteers, as appropriate

4.Order and maintain all necessary spiritual care supplies with the approval of the Director of Life Enrichment

5.Demonstrate professional and courteous conduct with all customers i.e. residents, family members, visitors, physicians, co-workers, etc

6.Maintain professional appearance and adhere to the departmental dress code

Job Requirements

Must possess the ability to make independent decisions, follow instructions, and accept constructive criticism. 

Must be able to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public. Must be able to work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and potentially hostile people within the facility.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree preferred

Prefer experience working with the aging population

Interest, knowledge and skills in One on One spiritual care with an emphasis on a holistic approach of care

Some completed CPE units preferred but not necessary

The interpersonal skills needed to work with distressed and anxious patients, families, and employees.

The analytical ability to assess patients’ spiritual needs and sense of well-being and find appropriate solutions to individual needs.

An empathy for the problems experienced by individual and families; commitment to help the distressed.

The communication skills necessary to counsel individual and families

Licensing/Certifications

Ordination or commissioning for ministry by a recognized religious group is preferred.  Candidate will be asked to provide this documentation of ecclesiastical endorsement.
